State Fair
Glory to God for new life everywhere!
for pigs' pink snouts snuffling for food or friend,
for baby bucks nudging with new horns' end,
for the quick hands of mice who lightly dare
the great world, for pigeons who condescend
to the unpuffed, for trusting weak inquire
of guinea pigs, for ducks grumbling in choirs,
for watchful eyes of (swish!) mares who attend.
The same spark greets you daily, eye to eye,
able to laugh or love, give or deny;
how much more difficult to love our peers!
All life that so relentlessly appears,
so hard and rich to love, shows the same hand,
richest to love of all, if we but can.
