To Our Girls

To Our Girls

(An occasional poem, written for the Hockaday Class of 2008 on Valentine's Day 1999)

One busy day, nearly a decade gone,
my heart was seized by two innocent eyes:
a baby girl claimed our hearts for her own:
her trust and needs and joy enriched our lives.
We cherished her, and worked to meet her needs,
and kissed and sang her songs; we glowed with pride
when first she walked, said "no," and learned to read;
we bandaged cuts, and hugged her when she cried.
Our little girls grow bigger ev'ry day,
finding new ways to think and talk and learn;
and as they bloom, we know they'll grow away
from us, until, as women, they return.
Sometimes they're more like hurricanes than doves,
But were, and are, and will be - cause for love.
